Wrestling wins Badger State Invitational

Out of 26 teams, the Waunakee wrestling team was victorious in the Badger State Invitational on Saturday, December 21.

Brett Farrell (113) received a first round bye and won each match until the championship match. Shane Rochon (Dodgeville) defeated Farrell by a technical fall for the first place victory in the 113 pound weight class. Farrell (15-2) placed second and scored 25.5 team points. Mason Spear (120) received a first round bye and defeated Dillon Danielson (Racine Park) and Jacob Zanotti (Westfield) in the first two matches of competition. In the semifinal round, Hunter Reid from Prairie Du Chien won by fall. Due to medical reasons, Spear had to forfeit the third place match against Sam Fahey (Oregon). Spear scored 18 team points for Waunakee.

Gibson Guralski (126) won by decision over Evan Sigafus (Darlington-Blackhawk) in the second round of competition after getting a first round bye. In the quarterfinal, Blake Endres (Sugar River) won by fall over Guralski. For the consolation round, Guralski won by major decision over Josh Anderson (Westfield) by 18-9. Guralski was defeated in the fifth place match by Gavyn Wilkins (North Crawford), and had 11 team points for Waunakee. Connor Cutsinger (132) finished individual competition in sixth place. Cutsinger received a bye and defeated Cooper Dunnett (Westfield) in the second round. Mason Sonnenberg (Cambridge) defeated Cutsinger in the quarter finals by fall. In the consolation round, Cutsinger defeated Koleton Russell (Brookfield East), but lost in the fifth place match by a technical fall to Eli Aird (Darlington-Blackhawk). Cutsinger was responsible for 13 team points. John Tasker (138) and Logan Boyle (142) combined for 20 team points. Tasker (7-10) had nine points, and Boyle (4-2) had 11 team points.

Gabe Metzler (150) won all four matches for a first place victory at the Badger State Invitational. In the championship match, Metzler won over Mason Groskreutz (Westfield) by fall in 2:24. With Metzler winning the championship, the point total is 32.5 for team points.

Braydon Barbian (157) placed in eighth and scored seven team points. Barbian’s only victory came against Avery Keller (Janesville Parker) in a 9-6 sudden victory. Sebastian Mejia-Gonzalez (165) and Lucas Varela (175) combined for 20 team points. Mejia-Gonzalez (7-4) had nine points, and Varela (4-2) had 11 points.

Sawyer Ellis (190) won in the second round by major decision over Jack MacEachern (Prairie Du Chien). Ellis was defeated by Owen Burling (Lake Mills) in a 55 second fall. Ellis bounced back in the consolation round and defeated Trevor Ray (Monona Grove/McFarland) by fall. Carter Wesley (Janesville Parker) won the fifth place match by fall. Ellis scored 13 team points.

McCoy Smith (216) fell to Blake Thiry (Prairie Du Chien) in the championship match by a 12-2 major decision. The second place finish for Smith (16-1) gave Waunakee 26 team points. Jackson Lenzendorf (285) remains undefeated with a first place individual victory. Lenzendorf defeated Jack Simmons (Prairie Du Chien) by a 13-4 decision. The first place victory gave Waunakee 32 team points.

The Warriors won the Badger State Invitational with a team score of 218 points. Prairie Du Chien finished in second place with 189 points, and Burlington had third place with 155 points.
