Strong outing in DeForest

After nine days off from their trip to Wausau, the Waunakee Warriors girls’ wrestling team returned to action on the mat, taking on a five-team event at DeForest High School on Monday, Jan. 26.

Among the other teams participating were the Lodi Blue Devils, DeForest Norskies, Monona Grove/McFarland Silver Eagles and the River Valley Blackhawks.

According to USA Bracketing, the Warriors finished first in team scores with 372 team points. No other team finished Monday’s event with more than 300 team points.

This only means that for Waunakee, there was plenty of individual success across the board.

Senior Ellie Lenzendorf won all three of her matches, each by pin. She needed less than two minutes to pin her first opponent before rattling off two more pins, one in roughly three minutes and the other in four minutes and thirty seconds to stay perfect.

Amanda Mejia, only a freshman, also went 3-0 on the evening. Mejia notably delivered two victories by pin and the other by DFF.

Fittingly, success would follow over with sophomore Kit Alsaker, who defeated DeForest’s Abigail Harris by pin in a hard-fought three-minute and 24-second battle. That victory came before a pair of commanding victories — both by pin — in less than two minutes to move to 3-0.

Other notable victories from the Warriors girls wrestling team on Monday night include pins from sophomore Emily Pelzer and Kiera Wilson.

Additional participants on Monday for Waunakee included sophomore Tsahmaya Oniang’o, sophomore Aubriana Szot, senior Sophia Fisher and junior Krisia Gaytan.

Up next for the Waunakee girls’ wrestling teamThe Warriors will return home for the first time since Friday, Dec. 19, hosting Milton in an inter-conference dual meet on Friday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m.

It will mark a quick turnaround for the Warriors, who will then compete at an invitational, called the “Marshladies Invite”, on Saturday, Jan. 31, in Horicon starting at 9 a.m.

Their conference tournament will be the following week on Friday, Feb. 6, at Baraboo High School, according to Waunakee Athletics.
